OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Nov. 16, 2016 – Kansas Gas Service is joining other utilities across the country to educate consumers about scams targeting utility customers.

November 16 is the inaugural National Utility Scam Awareness Day, which aims to raise awareness of telephone, mail, email, door-to-door and other scams that involve criminals posing as utility company employees in an attempt to steal your private information.

Keeping its customers and communities safe is a top priority for Kansas Gas Service, which is why the company is participating in the nationwide effort to prevent customers from falling victim to one of these scamming incidents.

Some scams involve individuals calling, emailing or coming to your door and claiming to work for Kansas Gas Service or another local utility, and demanding payment or personal information.

To avoid being the victim of fraudulent activities, here are some things you should know:

If your Kansas Gas Service account is current, no one from the company will call you and ask for personal financial information. However, Kansas Gas Service representatives may attempt to collect payment through courtesy calls on accounts that are past due.
Our employees wear Kansas Gas Service-logoed shirts and always carry a company ID.
Never provide your Social Security Number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone or at your home unless you initiated the contact and feel confident with whom you are speaking.
If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to work for Kansas Gas Service, hang up and call 1-800-794-4780 to verify that the call was authentic.
