Kansas Gas Service Announces Upgrades to CNG Fueling Stations

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – April 5, 2012 – Kansas Gas Service announced today that it has completed major upgrades to its public compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations in Overland Park and Topeka, Kansas.

The $560,000 upgrades include doubling the capabilities of compressors, which transform low-pressure natural gas into a transportation fuel, and adding storage tanks to increase the amount of natural gas available at each location to fill vehicles. New dispensers with updated controls make it easier for customers to operate the CNG pumps, improving fueling convenience.

“The upgrades to our CNG fueling stations will allow quicker, more complete and more reliable fills for commercial fleet operators and natural gas vehicle owners,” said Dennis Okenfuss, Kansas Gas Service vice president of administration. “We are committed to providing safe and reliable service to CNG operators who want to fuel with cleaner, more environmentally friendly domestic natural gas.”

Kansas Gas Service was awarded a $250,000 matching grant from the U.S. Department of Energy* to complete identical upgrades at each of its CNG fueling stations. These funds are part of the Midwest Region Alternative Fuels Project and are administered by the Metropolitan Energy Center and the Kansas City Regional Clean Cities Coalition to support projects that expand the use of alternative-fuel vehicles.

The Kansas Gas Service CNG fueling stations are located at 200 E. First St., in Topeka and 11401 W. 89th St., in Overland Park, and are open 24 hours a day. The company operates the only public CNG fueling stations currently in Kansas.
